Relief and Sleep Apnea
Who Is At Risk for Snoring and Sleep Apnea?
Targets of Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Although the causes of snoring and sleep apnea
are all not yet clear-cut, certain studies have already revealed who are most
prone to experience such condition.
Snoring is producing an unusual sound during
sleep mainly due to the collapse of the airway. The throat and inner side of
the tongue somehow merge with the soft palate, which leads to some vibrations
that produce that weird sound.
Sleep apnea, on the other hand, is a more
serious condition because breathing stops several times during sleep. Such
disturbance causes a person to unconsciously wake up periodically to restore
breathing. In general, sleep apnea deprives a person of enough sleep and rest
every night.
The causes for both snoring and sleep apnea are
varied but are generally structural and anatomical in nature. Some medical
conditions involving the brain and the heart are also being identified as causes
but these are much rarer.
Such findings point out who are at risk for
snoring and sleep apnea. They are as follows:
• Older people. The muscles of the body tend
to become more relaxed with age. Thus, there is greater tendency for the
muscles of the passageway to collapse during sleep and, again, block the
airway.
• Men. Although the reason behind this is not
yet very clear, statistics show that men are more likely to snore and/or suffer
from sleep apnea.
• Obese or overweight people. The muscles and
tissues of the throat, tongue, and passageway itself are relatively large which
causes some blockage. However, some interesting studies reveal that only 50% of
overweight people suffer from snoring and/or sleep apnea.
• Those coming from a family where sleep apnea
and snoring are common. Genetic predispositions are also considered as culprits
but the exact genetic makeup that leads to such conditions has not yet been
pointed out.
• People with some body structure problems and
anomalies. Problems with the structure of the mouth and its backside up to its
way down are major causes of airway blockage.
• Those with enlarged or swollen tonsils.
Children are prone to problems with the tonsils thus making them prone to
snoring and sleep apnea.
• Those suffering from nasal congestion and
irritation. Breathing normally requires effort, as air cannot pass through
easily.
• Those who has suffered from heart attack or
stroke. This has something to do with central sleep apnea, which arises because
of problems with the brain.
• People who snore. Snoring, by itself, can be
a cause of sleep apnea primarily because of the constant and repeated vibrations
of the throat and palate. The palate tends to lengthen which eventually reaches
up to the part where air passes.
• People with irregular sleep patterns and
schedule. Constant changes in schedule because of work or some concerns at home
can significantly cause distress in the body. This makes breathing more and
more unstable during sleep, especially during the earlier stages like stage 1
and REM sleep. As the body constantly experiences such instability, airflow may
be completely blocked for some time.
• Drug-dependents. Certain drugs cause too
much relaxation of the muscles. Examples of these drugs are those that are
taken in by people who have difficulty sleeping. Extremely relaxed muscles in
the throat and airway lead to their collapsing that blocks off the supply of air
coming from the nose and mouth.
•Alcoholics. Alcohol produces the same results
as sleep-inducing drugs. Those who take in too much alcohol especially before
going to sleep are obviously at risk for snoring and sleep apnea.
In some cases, people not falling under any of
these categories still suffer from snoring and/or sleep apnea. For those cases,
the cause is yet to be studied and explained.
There are already available devices in the
market that aim to intervene somehow with the condition. However, these are not
cures and sometimes even their temporary remedies are being questioned.
According to most observations, they just work by waking up the person and
disturbing the snoring and episodes of sleep apnea.
Surgery is an option but not everyone is
willing to undergo such risky procedure. However, both snoring and sleep apnea
are serious conditions, which, if not immediately treated, may lead to further
medical problems.
