A Child’s
Guide to Eldercare
If Long Term Care is an Option
What to Do When Aging Parents
Need Long-Term Care
Seeing formerly healthy parents forced to
depend on the care of other people and unable to function on their own is a
painful sight to witness for any child. Being unable to provide the necessary
medical and financial aid however is more painful to bear. While you’ve a steady
income to rely on, consider planning ahead and saving for your parents’ future
needs…before it’s too late.
The Difference between Traditional and
Long-Term Medical Care
We have discussed the various methods for
caring for your parent(s) in the previous chapters.
However, there’s more to worry about when your
parents are in need of long-term medical care. Traditional medical care is
usually provided when aging individuals are in need of temporary medical
assistance; traditional medical care is provided to help a person recover, or
rehabilitate or correct his injuries. Long-term care is provided, on the other
hand, on a permanent basis; people who are diagnosed as having a chronic ailment
are those in need of long-term care. Long-term care ensures that all the wants
and needs that a seriously ill and aging individual is no longer capable of
meeting are fully addressed by the person in charge.
How to Choose the Ideal Long-Term Care Option
Choosing the ideal long-term care solution for
the needs of aging parents must be a decision mutually reached by both parties:
the parents and their children.
Cost – Who’s going to pay for the medical
expenses and other fees associated with long-term care? What happens if your
parents become physically or mentally capable of overseeing their finances? Is
there any kind of financial support that your parents are entitled to?
Service – What type of help do your parents
need? What day-to-day tasks are your parents no longer able to perform? Learn
everything you can about the medical condition of your parents. Are there any
special needs that your parents may have but which are not offered by the
typical medical facility or caregiver?
Ambience and General Comfort – Do your parents
have any stated desires about the place they’re going to live in? Do they want
complete privacy or exposure to other people of their own age?
Insurance – Do your parents have insurance?
Will any of their insurance policies be useful in this situation? Does the
insurance company have any affiliates that could give you more discounts or
lower fees?
Location – Where is the facility located? Talk
to your parents; would they wish to live near or far from your home? Do nearby
facilities have adequate facilities and equipment, as well as a capable staff,
to ensure that your parents are given the best of care? Would you consider
hiring a full-time nurse instead to personally see to your parents’ needs in
their own home?
Types of Long-Term Care Solutions
Home Care Services: For the right amount and
with the right staff, there’s no need for your parents to move away home just to
benefit from the best of medical care. Although costly, this solution will
enable you to personally care for your parents whenever you have the time, and
for them to continue enjoying the comfort of familiar surroundings.
Nursing Homes – These facilities are primarily
intended to provide care for elderly individuals suffering from chronic
diseases. Patients there may either succumb to depression because of the
distance separating them from their loved ones or feel better because of the
company of fellow patients.
Helpful Reminders on Providing Long-Term Care
Power of Attorney – Make sure that your parents
have this document prepared and with you duly authorized to make decisions in
their behalf when they’re incapable of taking care of themselves anymore. If you
have employed a caregiver or nurse to take care of your parents, and you deem
the person trustworthy, consider giving her the right to do the same thing as
well in case of emergencies.
Making Your Own Will – No one can predict when
death would come for anyone. Hence, it’s important that you also make a will for
yourself to ensure that your parents will continued to be well-provided for,
even in the event of your sudden death.
Visit Regularly – Once your parents have been
settled in their new home, make sure you visit them regularly. If you don’t,
your parents might be in danger of experiencing depression and melancholia, both
of which will only aggravate their conditions.
Although providing long-term care for your
parents is truly a demanding and challenging responsibility, remember that
whatever you’re feeling is nothing compared to the pain and anguished being felt
by your parents.
